T20 World Cup 2021: David Warner could be one of the players of the tournament, says Shane Warne
Australia great Shane Warne has backed out-of-form opener David Warner to regain his form, saying that he could be one of the players of the tournament at the T20 World Cup.
Warner’s form is a huge concern but the team is adamant the opener will turn things around. His IPL form was woeful and he was dropped from the team for the second time this year after scores of 0 and 2 last month. Warner’s troubled run continued in the two warm-up games where he scored 0 and 1.
“To me, Davey Warner is a class act,” Warne said on Friday.
“OK, he’s had a couple of poor performances or hasn’t really got a score. Coming into the tournament he hadn’t played much cricket, so he, was a bit out of form.
“But I think he’s the type of guy who rises to the big occasion.
“The old saying, I know it’s a cliche, but class is permanent and form is temporary. I really think that’s the case with David, I really think he’s so dynamic.”
“If he’s on the song, I think the first couple of games are really important. If he gets away, he could be one of the players of the tournament,” Warne told SEN.
“He could be absolutely firing, so for me, he plays, absolutely no doubt in those first few games, he plays and hopefully finds his touch.”
Australia will hope their lackluster top-order can fire from the word go when they meet under-the-radar South Africa in the Group 1 match of the Super-12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021 at Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
The runners-up of the 2010 edition, Australia, are searching for their maiden T20 title. The Down Under side will enter the upcoming marquee tournament on the back of a horrific run, losing bilateral series to Bangladesh, West Indies, New Zealand, India, and England.
Many of the first-choice team members skipped the recent white-ball tours, during which Australia managed just five wins and lost 13 matches. Subsequently, most of their players have had scant preparation.
